There has recently been a significant growth in the use of water-based UV curable coatings for wood. The benefits of both technologies are well known, where UV curable coatings can give increased  production times, lower energy consumption and costs and improved resistance properties, water-based coatings are known for excellent wood grain wetting and adhesion, superior levelling and the ability to allow matting to very low levels of gloss. A new generation of water-based UV cured coating resins designed to work as primers on difficult wood or as highly “natural” top coatings has been developed to enhance the natural beauty of wooden substrate while providing enhanced adhesion on wood or on melamine impregnated paper surfaces. This allows formulation of coatings with excellent “green” credentials, which can also be used as part of coatings systems that incorporate 100% UV curing technology.
