It is well-known that surface preparation is key to providing high performance adhesive bonds to substrates as diverse as polymers, metals, ceramics and their composites. This presentation will review the current state-of-the-art processes, including those developed at Loughborough University, for the bonding of metals, polymers and glass. • It is well-known that surface preparation is key to providing high performance adhesive bonds to substrates as diverse as polymers, metals, ceramics and their composites. This presentation will review the current state-of-the-art processes, including those developed at Loughborough University, for the bonding of metals, polymers and glass. It will cover advances in anodising for structural joining of aluminium alloys and also “dry” plasma-based processes for multimaterial joining.
