In order to expedite the commercialisation of graphene containing products, the ability to compatibilise the graphene sheets with their host matrix is critical. As graphene, and many other nanoscale materials, do not mix readily with other materials, several methods have been developed to functionalise the surface with chemical groups compatible with the matrix. One such method is plasma functionalisation. This uses a low temperature plasma to engineer new surface suitable for the end use of the graphene, examples of the effect of functionalisation will be given across a wide range of materials. Another key enabler for the commercialisation of graphene is the ability to characterise both the surface of the material, but the bulk and surface properties of the filled material which is made.  Examples of the various techniques employed by CPI in its NFC facility will be shown.
