Designing functionalised surfaces forms the basis of a multi-billion dollar global industry, as well as helping to tackle some major societal challenges.  A range of innovative nature inspired concepts will be described for technological and societal applications: self-cleaning, virucidal (coronavirus), water harvesting in arid climates, anti-biofouling, and oil–water separation.  The underpinning fundamental research has been successfully exploited by three valuable start-up companies—products include the water protection of over one billion consumer electronic devices.
