Surfex

There has long been a necessity to protect and prolong the lifetime of metals exposed to aggressive environments, be it a chemical tank carrying nitric acid or a pump on a ship, thus techniques and materials for achieving long-lasting protection are in constant demand.

Two such techniques are rotolining and spray coating.  Rotolining is a process whereby a metal container is filled with polymer powder, fixed to an assembly and rotated in an oven, allowing the inner walls to be coated with molten polymer, which cools to provide a protective barrier.  Spray coating involves applying powdered polymer to the outside of the part via a spray coating gun onto an electrostatically charged part.

Fluoropolymers have an unsurpassed reputation in the coatings world for their thermal and chemical resistance.  Because ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) has excellent chemical and thermal resistance and is also easy to apply due to its thermoplastic nature, this discussion aims to focus on the benefits of rotolining and spray coating with Fluon® ETFE.
