Developing high-performance formulations with minimal VOC emissions remains a challenge for formulators across a variety of paints and coatings applications. Alkanolamines, which are well-known for their exceptional ability to wet, grind, and stabilize a wide range of pigments, can help formulators achieve an optimal blend of other wetting and dispersing agents, while reducing the VOC profile of a formulation. With their innate affinity for pigment surfaces and the ability to substitute conventional counter ions of surfactants and dispersing agents, alkanolamine additives play an essential role in influencing, and improving various critical aspects of paint and dry-film performance, such as initial particle size distribution, storage stability, hiding power, corrosion protection, and colour strength. Fast, Sustainable Curing and Drying of Industrial Coatings Using Lasers

Laser overturns the paradigm of a hot oven. Unlike traditional heat sources and IR lamps, lasers deliver nearly all their energy to the product, while expending negligible energy heating the oven atmosphere and walls. Like a microwave oven, the directed energy and volumetric nature of laser curing and drying is able to process industrial coatings with astounding speed. We demonstrate powder coat curing in under 2 minutes. We’ll show that lasers provide similar advantages drying paint or curing porcelain enamel. The combination of high productivity and thermal efficiency uniquely suits the sustainability needs of the industrial coatings industry.

How Composite Pigments Improve Coating Opacity and Ultimately Result in Improved Cost and Sustainability

By utilizing composite pigments containing optimally spaced TiO2, a formulator can improve overall TiO2 efficiency in waterborne coatings. This will result in a significant increase in the opacity and whiteness, allowing the use of thinner films. The substantial improvement in opacity allows for thinner films (lower coat weight) to be applied while maintaining target coating opacity. This paper will show how the TiO2 efficiency is improved using composite pigments and the potential impact they have on spreading rate/ film thickness and therefore improved coating cost and sustainability.

A Novel Biocide-free Rheology Modifier from Dow for Next Generation Architectural Coatings

  • Univar Solutions is happy to present the latest development from Dow Coatings Materials, Acrysol RM735BF. This biocide-free associative thickener provides excellent mid-shear viscosity in architectural coatings. It can be used as the sole rheology modifier in many formulations and has the advantage of being both biocide-free and free of any hazard labels. How Can You Formulate Sustainable Flooring Coatings Based on Two-component (2K) Polyurethanes and Polyureas?

Polyisocyanates are widely used as building blocks together with polyols to form polyurethanes (PU). These materials are used in a variety of applications due to their excellent durability, and mechanical properties.

However, traditional PU systems are solvent-borne and there is an increasing interest to reduce the amount of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in these systems to improve their sustainability.

This presentation will look at two possible solutions to this challenge: solvent free systems based on polyurea technology and water-borne PU systems, and will show how diisocyanate crosslinkers from Vencorex can be used to help formulate such systems for floor coatings.

The transformation to a more sustainable world is also challenging for the paint and coatings industry. Therefore, sustainable raw materials are becoming increasingly important.

Improvements can be made in many ways. One possible approach is to increase the proportion of renewable raw materials. Alkyd resins in particular are by definition already based on larger proportions of bio based and renewable raw materials.

We would like to show how Camelina oil can help to increase sustainable shares in alkyd resins even more without sacrificing excellent performance characteristics especially in wood care products. In particular, we will provide an overview how Camelina combines various advantages for a more sustainable future.

Quartzene® Aerogel as Performance Additive in Paint and Coatings

Quartzene® aerogels are an aerogel-like, porous, amorphous silica material produced from a completely water-borne process that differs from other ways of manufacturing aerogels. The aerogel with its porous structure contributes to excellent thermal insulation, improved fire behavior and lightweight to several applications within the building and construction, process industry and transport segment. Quartzene® can be used as a thermal insulative filler to decrease the thermal conductivity of a paint or a coating, for increasing the reflectivity for a cool roof paint and for stabilization of fire retardant and intumescent paints for example.

Laser Cleaning and Stripping – Fast, Precise and Sustainable Replacement for Wet Processes and Abrasives

Laser cleaning and stripping solutions are poised to impact the coatings industry as efficient and sustainable alternatives to prepare surfaces for coating and stripping away old coatings. Lasers are also used in the spray booth to remove build up on fixtures such as hooks. An obvious benefit of cleaning with a laser is that no consumables are required. Laser energy may be directed with high precision, adding benefits when only portions of the workpiece require cleaning. A laser beam may be translated at 10 meters/second, enabling extremely short process cycle times. Given the Coating industry's focus on productivity and sustainability, it is time to give laser a hard look.

“Pneumatic Mixing. Bringing Chemicals back to life” – Air based mixing has many advantages over more conventional methods. There is no electricity and no moving parts, which makes it a safe, non-invasive technology – as well as being extremely easy to implement, set up and use. It can re-animate paints, inks and chemicals which would otherwise have been rendered redundant or less effective over time. The unit clears sedimentation and assures a homogenous distribution of chemicals within each cm3, even for viscous fluids. An IBC can be mixed in as little as 30 minutes, and a drum in 15-20.

Using Composite TiO2 Pigments to Reduce The Use of Coloured Pigments Hence Reducing Cost And Carbon Footprint

Coloured pigments are obviously vital to imparting the apparent colour to coatings materials. However, in almost all cases, variations in the opacifying power of this largely absorptive materials mean that significant amounts of Titanium Dioxide is required in the formulation in order confer the appropriate level of opacity.

This necessary amount of TiO2 has the detrimental effect of scattering white light at the film surface and reducing the Chroma and strength of the coloured pigmen.

New developments in opacifying composite pigment technology allow the use of significantly less TiO2 in such coloured systems whilst maintaining opacity. This provides a great opportunity to reformulate coatings using less coloured pigment hence reducing costs and carbon footprint.

Replacing Tin-based Catalysts without Compromising Performance in Polyurethane Coatings

Due to their durability, polyurethane coatings are important technologies in the industrial coatings market. For many years, tin-based catalysts such as dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) were commonly used as crosslinkers in polyurethane reactions. Crosslinking adds benefits such as faster dry times, increased hardness, durability, abrasion resistance, and water and solvent resistance. However, a catalyst can negatively impact performance properties such as pot life. Following market trends and regulatory pressures, this presentation will address how Borchers’ catalyst technology can help replace tin-based catalysts without compromising performance. The data will also highlight how performance issues such as short pot life can be resolved.
